Over 50 mothers and grandmothers joined us for our mother’s day lunch on Wednesday 14th. The weather was glorious, the hall looked beautiful with candles and daffodils and everyone had a special time together. Oliver’s grandmother told us that the last time she’d eaten at St John’s was in 1942, when she was on special duty here for a week due to staff shortage at the school. She remembered meals of boiled rice with a small serving of cheese and half an apple, suet pudding with leeks and a few flecks of fat bacon! Claire, our cook, has higher standards and worked a miracle in the kitchen feeding so many a meal of roast pork followed by apple pie and custard, and all in so short a time.
